Erosion Control for planned site work

Any time soil is disturbed — clearing, grading, excavating — it becomes vulnerable to rain and runoff. Erosion control is the set of practices that keeps that soil on your site: silt fence at the downslope edge, protection on storm drain inlets, and stabilization of bare ground so it doesn't wash. JL Landworx installs erosion and sediment control on construction sites, rural properties, and shoreline areas across Central Minnesota and the greater Twin Cities.

This work matters for two reasons. Practically, eroded soil ends up in ditches, wetlands, lakes, and your neighbor's property, and it takes your topsoil with it. And on many projects, sediment control isn't optional — construction activity that disturbs ground is commonly subject to erosion control requirements, and the measures have to be in place and maintained.

Erosion control is rarely a standalone job. It is most often paired with our excavation, grading, and land clearing work — the same crew that disturbs the ground installs the measures that protect it, and stabilization follows as the work finishes.

Our erosion control process

  1. Site evaluation

    We walk the site to see where soil is exposed, which way water runs, and what's at risk downslope — ditches, inlets, wetlands, or shoreline.

  2. Control plan

    The right measures are matched to each risk area: silt fence where runoff leaves the site, inlet protection at storm drains, and a stabilization plan for bare ground.

  3. Installation

    Measures are installed before or as ground is disturbed — silt fence trenched in properly, inlets protected, and vulnerable areas addressed first.

  4. Stabilization

    As work finishes in each area, bare soil is seeded, mulched, or blanketed so it stops being a sediment source.

  5. Maintenance and removal

    Controls are checked and repaired through the project, then removed once the site is stable and vegetation has taken hold.

Good to know

  • Erosion control is cheapest and most effective when it is planned with the dirt work, not added after a washout.
  • Many construction projects are subject to erosion and sediment control requirements — confirm what applies to yours before ground is broken.
  • Silt fence only works if it is installed correctly — trenched in, supported, and maintained. A fence lying flat on the ground controls nothing.
  • Stabilization is the end goal: controls like silt fence are temporary, and the site is only done when vegetation or surfacing holds the soil permanently.

Erosion Control questions

Does my construction project need erosion control?

If it disturbs soil, very likely yes. Many projects are required to have sediment controls in place, and even where no rule applies, unprotected bare soil will wash in the first hard rain. We can look at your site and tell you what measures make sense and where they need to go.

What's the difference between erosion control and sediment control?

Erosion control keeps soil from moving in the first place — stabilization, vegetation, mulch, blanket. Sediment control catches soil that does move before it leaves the site — silt fence and inlet protection. A good plan uses both: stabilize what you can, and catch what you can't.

Can you handle the erosion control as part of my excavation or clearing project?

Yes, and that is how most of our erosion control work happens. The crew doing the dirt work installs the controls as the site is opened up and stabilizes areas as they finish, which keeps everything on one schedule with one contractor.

How long does silt fence stay up?

Follow the approved project requirements and the responsible authority's removal criteria. Temporary controls require inspection and maintenance while they remain in service; timing depends on stabilization, weather, construction progress, and the applicable plan.

My shoreline is eroding — is that the same kind of work?

Related, but shorelines are their own situation. Bank reshaping and stabilization can slow shoreline erosion, but work near lakes and wetlands is often regulated, so approvals may be needed before any work happens. We can evaluate the bank and talk through what is practical, and you should confirm requirements with the relevant authorities first.
