Driveway Demolition
Driveway demolition is the tear-out and haul-off of a failed concrete or asphalt driveway, with the subgrade prepared and compacted so the new surface starts on stable ground.

When a driveway is cracked through, heaved, or crumbling at the edges, patching stops making sense. Full tear-out is the reset: the old concrete or asphalt comes out, the debris is hauled off, and the ground underneath is prepared properly so the new driveway doesn't inherit the old one's problems. The tear-out is only half the job. Minnesota's freeze-thaw cycles punish driveways built on poor subgrade, which is often why the old one failed. After removal we address the base — excavating soft or unsuitable material, correcting drainage, and compacting the subgrade — so your concrete or asphalt contractor pours or paves on ground that will hold. Since we also build driveways, the whole replacement can run as one scope if you want it to.

Our driveway demolition process
Site review
We assess the existing surface, thickness, and base condition, confirm the tear-out limits, and discuss what the new surface needs from the subgrade.
Tear-out
The old concrete or asphalt is broken out with excavators and loaded for haul-off. Reinforced or thick sections take more time but come out the same way.
Subgrade correction
Soft, organic, or unsuitable material under the old driveway is excavated and replaced. Drainage problems that contributed to the failure are corrected.
Compaction and prep
The subgrade is shaped and compacted to the elevations your new surface requires, with clean transitions at the street and garage.
Handoff
The prepared base is ready for your concrete or asphalt contractor — or we continue into the new driveway build as the same scope.

- Coordinate tear-out timing with your concrete or asphalt contractor so the prepared base doesn't sit through weather before the new surface goes in.
- If the driveway footprint is changing, have the new layout staked before tear-out so removal limits are clear.
- Aprons at the street may fall under municipal requirements; check before scheduling that portion.

Driveway Demolition questions
Do you haul away the old concrete or asphalt?
Yes. All broken material is loaded and hauled off as part of the job. Concrete and asphalt are typically taken to facilities that recycle them, and disposal costs are built into the quote.
Why did my driveway fail in the first place?
Usually the base. Freeze-thaw cycles move driveways built on soft, wet, or poorly compacted subgrade, and water sitting under or beside the slab accelerates it. If the base caused the failure, we correct it during the tear-out so the new surface doesn't repeat it.
Can you prepare the base for my concrete contractor?
Yes — that's a common arrangement. We tear out the old surface, correct and compact the subgrade to the required elevations, and hand off a ready base. We can also build the new driveway ourselves if you'd rather keep it under one scope.
How long does driveway tear-out take?
Duration depends on driveway area and thickness, reinforcement, access, debris loading and haul distance, weather, and the amount of subgrade correction or grading included. The written quote provides a sequence and schedule for the measured scope.
Should the old driveway come out even if parts of it look fine?
If sections have failed, the base under them has moved — and the same conditions usually exist under the 'fine' sections. Partial tear-outs leave joints and transitions that tend to crack first. We assess it on site and tell you when a partial removal genuinely makes sense.
